About Welcome Po Kayo
OUR STORY
Arriving from the Philippines in Adelaide, Australia in 2010, Mike, a young international student, was fortunate to have relatives already settled in South Australia who provided him with unwavering support throughout his studies. As he pursued his education, Mike observed the struggles faced by himself and many of his fellow international classmates who lacked such familial support.
Despite his academic ambitions, Mike witnessed how the challenges of adapting to a new culture, finding employment, and establishing social networks often left his peers feeling isolated, homesick, and disheartened. Some even faced the heartbreaking reality of having to return to their home countries before completing their studies. Years passed, and Mike successfully graduated, built a career, and started a family of his own.
However, the memories of his journey and the struggles of his fellow international students lingered in his heart.
In 2023, fuelled by a deep desire to give back and make a meaningful difference, Mike together with his wife Kate decided it was time to take action. Drawing from his own experiences and driven by empathy for others facing similar challenges, Mike and Kate founded the "Welcome Po Kayo" group. The name, derived from Filipino, translates to "Welcome all of you," embodying the spirit of warmth, inclusivity, and hospitality that Mike sought to instill within the international student community.
With a small team of passionate volunteers, Mike and Kate set out to create a supportive ecosystem for international students arriving in Adelaide. The group organized social events, day tours, and networking opportunities to foster connections and combat feelings of loneliness and isolation. Through tireless dedication and unwavering commitment, the "Welcome Po Kayo" group began to make a tangible difference in the lives of international students, providing them with the support and resources they needed to thrive in their new environment. As words spread, the group's impact grew, and they received support from local businesses, community organizations, and even government agencies.
Today, the "Welcome Po Kayo" group stands as a beacon of hope and solidarity for international students in Adelaide, embodying Mike's and Kate's vision of a community where everyone feels welcomed, supported, and empowered to pursue their dreams. As for Mike, his journey from international student to community leader serves as a testament to the transformative power of empathy, compassion, and the simple act of giving back.
